Following waves of xenophobic violence, CAMP has implemented a multi-faceted strategy of direct action, narrative repair, and community healing to support migrant communities living in terror. June 30th marked the “deadline day” set by groups like March and March – the day by which they demanded that undocumented migrants leave the country. Thousands of migrants fled before this deadline and tens of thousands more continue to flee, regardless of documentation status. In the weeks since the 30th, the violence has only grown, leaving migrant and other communities alike in a state of disarray, disruption, and fear. In our action, we listened, and learned that the anger and frustration felt by people living in South Africa is not invalid, but it is misplaced. It is a tool of those with power to keep those without divided, and the only way we can effectively make the structural changes necessary to improve all of our lives is through unity, creative problem-solving and a demand for collective action.
